Yelling. Crushing noise level. Terror then he hits her. She cries. Things get quiet. Then it starts again. Locked in his room, the boy sits on the floor next to his bed. That’s the place he goes when they go at it. Mother and alien. This man/boyfriend. The one who watches television and drinks long cans of malt liquor in the dark. Sometimes the alien is there when his mother isn’t. The alien doesn’t talk. The alien drinks, beats mother and watches television. The boy knows that he is lucky the alien doesn’t beat on him. Aliens beat on his friends. He sees them at school with their bruises. He figures that aliens are here to make life hard as possible.
